Dawson Construction completed the Skagway Seawalk and Upland Development Phase 5 for the Municipality of Skagway, creating an inviting waterfront promenade designed to welcome the thousands of cruise ship visitors who arrive in this historic Gold Rush town each summer. Designed by Tryck Nyman Hayes, Inc., the Seawalk also serves as a year-round park for Skagway's approximately 1,100 permanent residents, enhancing the community's public recreation infrastructure.
The project included construction of concrete walkways, paved pathways, architectural pergolas providing shaded gathering areas, and a new public restroom facility. Landscape amenities include custom benches, decorative elements, and professionally designed plantings that complement the dramatic natural setting of Skagway, which is nestled at the head of Taiya Inlet and surrounded by steep, glacier-carved mountains of the Coast Range. The fully ADA-accessible seawalk features interpretive panels that educate visitors on Skagway's rich history, from its origins as the primary gateway to the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897-98 to its present-day role as a major Alaska cruise port.
The Skagway Seawalk transformed the town's waterfront from a utilitarian port area into a destination that sets the tone for visitors' entire Alaska experience. Cruise passengers step off the ship onto an accessible, beautifully designed promenade with panoramic harbor views and interpretive panels that connect them to the history of the place they are visiting. For Skagway's residents, it is a year-round park in a town that had limited public recreation infrastructure. The project delivered exactly what a small Alaska community needs from its tourism dollars, infrastructure that serves visitors and residents alike.
From emergency repairs to ground-up builds, Dawson teams deliver across Southeast Alaska and Northwest Washington.
