Dawson Construction completed the McKinley Chalet Resort project, a series of new buildings at a destination hotel deep in the Alaska wilderness near Denali National Park and Preserve. The project brings modern hospitality amenities to one of North America's most spectacular natural settings, where visitors come to experience the grandeur of Denali (formerly Mount McKinley), the highest peak in North America at 20,310 feet.
The scope included construction of a 7,800 square foot restaurant designed to showcase the surrounding wilderness views, a 2,000 square foot retail area for guests, and an 825 square foot outdoor covered amphitheater for evening entertainment and ranger programs. Designed by The Portico Group, the wood-framed buildings complement the natural environment while providing the comfort and functionality expected by modern travelers.
Extensive site improvements accompanied the building construction, including boardwalks, decking, patio spaces, walking paths, and landscaping that integrate the new facilities into the existing resort campus. A significant challenge was maintaining full resort operations throughout construction during the busy summer tourism season, requiring careful scheduling and noise management to preserve the guest experience in this pristine wilderness setting.
The new restaurant, retail space, and amphitheater transformed the guest experience at McKinley Chalet Resort, giving visitors dining with wilderness views, shopping for Alaska-made goods, and evening programs under a covered outdoor stage. The Portico Group's design disappeared into the landscape; guests see a resort that belongs in its setting, not a construction project. Dawson delivered the buildings operational for the tourism season, and the boardwalks and paths that connect them created a cohesive campus that feels like it's been there as long as the mountain itself.

From emergency repairs to ground-up builds, Dawson teams deliver across Southeast Alaska and Northwest Washington.
