Dawson completed the renovation and addition to George H. Gilson Middle School in Valdez, doubling the facility's size and creating a more flexible, multi-use educational space. The updated 56,800 square foot school includes modern classrooms, a gymnasium, staff and administrative offices, a commercial kitchen, a multi-purpose gathering room, and fully accessible restrooms.
A key achievement was the installation of a high-performance thermal building envelope that provides a significantly more efficient heating system, saving an estimated 48,000 BTU per square foot per year, a critical improvement in Valdez's harsh subarctic climate where energy costs can be substantial.
Dawson's team showed strong project management by accelerating the construction schedule, ultimately delivering the completed school four months ahead of the original timeline. This early completion allowed students and staff to return to their modernized facility well before anticipated, minimizing disruption to the educational calendar and giving Valdez a school that can serve its community for decades to come.
From emergency repairs to ground-up builds, Dawson teams deliver across Southeast Alaska and Northwest Washington.
