BHA Green Communities Program

CLIENT:

Bellingham Housing Authority

LOCATION:

Bellingham, Washington

STRUCTURE:

260,000 square feet (in total)

ARCHITECT:

RMC Architects, PLLC

DESCRIPTION: Scope consisted of performing energy-related improvements to mechanical and envelope systems for three high-rise buildings; Lincoln Square, Washington Square, and Chuckanut Square in Bellingham, Washington. The buildings were originally constructed in the late 1960s and had been remodeled in the years since; these buildings provide housing for low-income, disabled and elderly residents.

As a part of this project more than 400 toilets were removed from the apartments, crushed, made into 'poticrete', and poured as sidewalks. These toilets would otherwise have wound up in a landfill.
